Hannah Earnshaw, a PhD student at Durham University, has been named on a shortlist of 100 candidates from around the world who are in with a chance to become the first humans to travel to Mars.
The second year PhD student, who studies astronomy at Durham, said: "It's a really great thing for humanity to achieve. It is pushing the boundaries, it is exploration - just a whole load of possibilities.” The Dutch project will eventually be scaled down to just 24 potential colonists, who will then begin a seven-year course in 2018 with liftoff planned for 2025.
